How Google Search Has Changed Over the Years

How Google Search Has Changed Over the Years

Google search is something that we almost take for granted, like Amazon or instant access to coffee through our smartphones. But Google search wasn’t always this huge – and the search engine wasn’t mentioned in any early-nineties television shows, because it wasn’t invented yet. Here’s a look at how Google search has changed over the years, including some of their biggest milestones as a company.

The Evolution of Google Search

Google’s First Steps

Google was officially launched in 1998, after a collaborative student project that was originally called BackRub. The first Google Doodle also appeared the same year and has been a regular thing since then to commemorate important events and people.

Google Goes International

The next big step for Google was reaching into the international webspace. In 2000, the website was translated into several world languages. Today, Google still continues its translations to bring their internet search experience to more people around the globe

Google Image Search

One of the most popular Google features today wasn’t around back in the early days. In 2001, Google brought in the Image Search function, which populates pictures to whatever search term was entered. At the time, this was a web-first.

However, the ability to reverse search images was still a few years into the future.

Google Autosuggestions

Autosuggestions is one more feature that seems to have been there forever, but amazingly wasn’t. Google first introduced the Autosuggestions feature in 2004.

Today, it’s almost second nature to think of what Google might suggest for search keys – especially for anyone writing SEO content. Can you imagine a time back when this wasn’t the case?

The NYSE

Google made waves and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2004. This milestone marked a change in the website, but also a change in the whole company that would surely serve them well in the years to come. Since its NYSE listing, Google/Alphabet Inc. has become one of the world’s largest and most powerful tech companies.

Google Trends

Google Trends was launched in 2006. For SEO experts and content writers alike, Google Trends is one of the first places to find keywords and the numbers behind them. It’s become an essential keyword tool, which many others have tried to copy – but face it, most of us are still checking Google Trends first!

If you want to know what’s on the news (or on people’s minds), then Google Trends is one of the first important places to stop.

Overstock.com & JCPenney

SEO wasn’t a thing before Google came around, and the year 2011 was one of the first times that Google held large companies responsible for the use of banned SEO tactics. Overstock.com and JCPenney received penalties from the search engine giant after rigging results. In short, this is why ethics and SEO are a thing today.

Longform Results

Featured articles appearing in search results were first introduced in 2013 and made a huge change to how search results are represented as well as how SEO experts began to write for content to rank higher on the search engine results page (SERP).

While it might look like a small change, featured articles had a huge impact on how search results are seen – and how detailed the results can be.

Google Passkeys

Innovation and Google go hand in hand. Just when you think that Google has come up with everything, they release another cool feature that you’d imagine has been around forever. Google Passkeys is one of the latest features, brought in during 2022, that aims to increase the level of security behind your entire Google account.

Passwords are becoming old news!

Better Keywords

Google updated its means of keyword search in 2022. The change might not have brought any visual candy to the site, but it alters almost everything about how keywords match up with content on the internet.

Content farms have received more penalties since 2022, and the internet is trending towards being a place where the best content wins instead of the content that turns more heads.
